Whatsapp, the common messenger platform being used worldwide and quite popular medium to interact and share Text Messages, Video or Voice Calls, Contacts, Location, Send Files and Pictures from your Mobile. Many a times the question arises that although so convenient for sharing the images via Whatsapp, does the resolution or quality of images decrease when sending photos from WhatsApp?
Images, Photographs, High Resolution Creative or Selfies Clicked from a High Quality Smartphone Camera when transferred or shared over Whatsapp to your Family, Network or Circles, although its fit for viewing purpose but still we miss out to recognise that the send or shared file is compressed for prompt sending over networks and therefore its resolution is converted to something fair enough to maintain viewing quality and reducing the file size to be transferred swiftly over internet.
When one sends a picture through WhatsApp, the WhatsApp Server compresses the image for easy sharing (Lowering the file size for faster downloads at even slow internet speeds). Compressing an image size is achieved by lowering the resolution and/or reducing the JPEG quality. WhatsApp was never intended to handle High-Resolution Photo transfers since that would take a lot of time to download, process or store them and that will fail the purpose of speedy conversations. A perfectionist shot of 30MB++ File size photograph or 20 Mega Pixel Camera Shot for 5-6MB File Size is just reduced to few KB while sharing over Whatsapp and is delivered on other end in fractions of seconds. Whatsap automatically reduces the image clarity in order to minimise the file size. So by the end a perfect high resolution clear image will reach other end as just a fairably visible picture of few KB only. That’s why picture quality degrades (loses its clarity) when shared over WhatsApp. So if one wants to share images without compression or don’t want to lose the image quality, send the image as a document in Whatsapp.
So if you are a Creative Designer or Graphic Designer, it pains when one receives the original photographs of high resolution on WhatsApp and while working on Creative, one is playing with the Image Quality just fairly visible to human eyes but the image editing software and final outcome of graphics (or designed creative) with such received photographs is waste of skills at times due to low image quality.
Tips to Send Pictures and Photographs in WhatsApp without Losing Quality
- Send Original Picture via WhatsApp by Renaming the Image:
Open any file explorer and rename the images to be sent from image.jpg (or .png or .jpeg) to image.pdf or image.doc. The explorer might show a warning message after renaming. Simply ignore it and proceed. Now the particular image becomes a pdf/doc file. You can easily attach this file as a document and send to the recipient. - Creating Multiple Images as a ZIP:
Another smart way is to place the images into a zip file. Ensure that the files you are attaching for the ZIP are not from again a WhatsApp Source and are in their original file form while being selected for attaching. - By Uploading to Cloud and Sharing the Link:
Upload Images to Google Drive or Dropbox or any other preferred Cloud Platform and Send the Link to the Recipient.
So next time while sharing your high resolution memorable photos, selfie clicks or Professional Business Photos to the Creative Designer or sending them to Photo-studio for Printing, don’t miss to use the alternative tricks or techniques for sending the images rather using WhatsApp for maintaining their original form, clarity and quality. Else whats the purpose of having High Resolution DSLR image converted to just a Photo clicked from 5 Mega Pixel Basic Camera Pic and Quality of Creative or its Print not coming up-to your expectations just for the sake of simplicity and time saving while sending it.
