Decline in Shopping on Onam in Kerala

Homz Komfort - E-Retail of Home Decor, Home Appliances and Home Accessories

8 Years ago, Onam Sales Accounted 65% of the Annual Turnover of the Consumer Goods industry in Kerala. Now, it is 25% of the Annual Revenue. Experts say this sight might recur because Onam is losing its Festive spirit and sheen it had five years ago.

Traffic Congestion and the Lack of Parking Space are other two closely related factors that are affecting the inflow of the shoppers to Kochi’s traditional business districts of MG Road and Kaloor.

“Shops with ample parking space only survive on MG Road,” said Nithyananda Kamath, Managing Partner, Krishna Novelty Stores, who runs three clothing stores on MG Road. “Whenever I decide on the location for a new store, I ensure that there is parking space for at least 100 cars,” said T S Pattabhiraman, Chairman and Managing Director of Kalyan Silks.
